Our club will once again be partnering with Ternero Olive Oil to create Soroptimist-labeled gourmet olive oil in time for holiday cooking and gifts. This year, we are also offering vinegars and flavored olive oil in smaller bottles, also $20 each.

Produced in Lincoln, the olive oils from this local family-run business have won two Golds and Bronze medals at the California State Fair, was a New York International Olive Oil Competition awardee and finalist in the Martha Stewart American Made competition.

Members of our club showed support for Acres of Hope by dressing in their ReNew thrift store purchases at the club meeting on October 20. Becky Faudree won best prize for her head-to-toe fashion ensemble including designer purse and earrings. Karen Fraser-Middleton was recognized for strutting her resort-wear down the runway. It was great fun to see everyone’s fabulous buys for a good cause. Many also took donations to ReNew.

Being a member of Soroptimist has encouraged me to educate myself and get involved with my community.  Our recent guest speaker, Lisa Risdal from Acres of Hope, was informative and encouraging as she presented the many hardships and struggles women with children face daily in our local towns.

What can we do as a club to help make a difference for these families?

Shopping at ReNew, the Acres of Hope thrift store (1725 Santa Clara Dr, Roseville), is a great start. Lisa said that 40% of ReNew’s profit is a direct donation to Acres of Hope.

In October, Soroptimist International (SI) celebrated 100 years of empowering women economically through education. To celebrate our club’s contributions, the November 17 program will feature past-presidents and members of SI Loomis Basin sharing projects that have impacted our local and global community. Join us for a fun celebratory event at Round Table Pizza in Loomis with socializing at 5:30 and the program at 6 PM. Learn more about Soroptimist International history.

The club members were thrilled that Loomis could once again host at the Eggplant Festival. Our club booth sold succulent pumpkins, masks and scrunchies, and added $388 to our coffers. The event allowed the club to share our projects with the community and meet women who share our vision of empowerment through education. One new member joined on the spot and several showed interest in becoming members. Thank you to all of those who volunteered to decorate and represent the club in our booth.

In November, our club is traditionally honored by attending the Thanksgiving lunch at the Loomis senior LIFE center; save the date November 18. On December 16, our club cooks the holiday celebration meal and we’ll have several shifts and ways you can help prep, cook, serve and clean up during this meal. Thanks to Jenny Knisley and Peggy Word who lead this committee.

The seniors are so appreciative of the support from our club since we founded the senior LIFE center many years ago. In June, we presented the center with funds to support teachers for classes offered on Tuesday and Thursday from 9 AM-noon including art, yoga, crafting, stretchersize, painting and Zumba.

Sharon O’Donnell has been a member of our club since March of 2015. “I moved to California from Colorado in 1990 with a view toward enjoying the Sierra Nevada mountain range and all the possibilities that were within visiting reach in Northern California,” said Sharon. “I was particularly interested in meeting new residents in the Loomis area and especially in being able to do something worthwhile for the community.”

While in Colorado, Sharon was the sole proprietor of a “woman owned” machine shop.  “We did highly skilled work for the Air Force (including NORAD),” said Sharon. “I also did commercial construction oversight and residential development as a paralegal.”  After arriving in California, she went into contracting with hospitals and doctors for major clients in the healthcare industry nationwide, worked as realtor in residential real estate  and was a disaster relief representative for the Small Business Administration.

She indicated that Soroptimist offered a way to meet people while making a difference. “In searching for ways to meet my goals, I found Soroptimist Loomis Basin to be what I was looking toward, along with meeting the great women who were already members to guide me along,” said Sharon. “I have enjoyed being a part of all the activities, fundraisers and projects that have been envisioned and accomplished by all of the club members; it does take a village to make things happen.” Sharon has played an integral part of the club’s leadership by serving as secretary, treasurer and president.

Sharon says that her favorite activities are reading, water and snow skiing (not downhill but cross-country) and gardening.
